Tengu mask
Tengu mask
Ornamental mask of the Noh theater portraying a Tengu. The Tengu are imaginary beings belonging to Japanese mythology who live in the mountains and forests. They are generally represented as bird-men, with a long prominent nose or even a beak. Unlike the other monsters of Japanese folklore, tengu are neither annoying nor harmful. In fact, although some of them are described as cheaters or pranksters, in general, they are seen as wise and respectful teachers.
The mask is made of ceramic and has been fixed on a wooden base to hang it on the wall with a purple cord. Measures of the wooden base: 27.2cm x 20.8cm.
