Ornamental mask of the Noh theater representing a smiling elderly man, with characteristic tufts of beard on the sides of the mouth, a goatee and locks of hair styled on the forehead.
Okina, literally "old man" is the name of a dance show that includes the dance Senzai, Okina and Sanbaso. These dances have always taken on a dual significance, religious and profane. Originally they were staged by priests near temples, for official occasions, for New Year celebrations or the blessing of a building. Subsequently, even in the secular sphere, these dances were performed in special circumstances, such as New Year's Eve, the inauguration of a theater or the birthday of a highly respected actor.
The mask is made of ceramic and has been fixed on a wooden base to hang it on the wall with a purple cord. Measures of the wooden base: 27.2cm x 20.8cm.
