Kokeshi made and hand painted by award-winning artist Sansaku Sekiguchi. Born in 1925 in Gunma prefecture, he began making his first kokeshi at the age of 28. He has won numerous awards including the coveted "Prime Minister Award" three times in 1969, 1973 and 1975. Unfortunately he passed away on April 20, 2018 at the age of 93.
He is the only artist to be named by the Japanese government as "Creative Kokeshi Master".
The kokeshi made by this artist are quite rare and precious, sought after by collectors all over the world, and differ from the kokeshi made by other artists for the elegant expression of the face and the accuracy of the details.
This kokeshi depicts a traditional fisherman from a Japanese village with his rod and fishing basket. It is an exceptional piece in the details and in the carvings.
The kokeshi is 17cm high, comes with a wooden tag with his name and the artist's stamp and its original packaging is included. Although the kokeshi is a piece made before the artist's death, its condition is excellent.
