Kokeshi made and hand painted by Usaburo Kokeshi, representing Momotaro, the protagonist of a popular Japanese legend dating back to the Edo period.
It is said that Momotaro was found by an elderly couple inside a huge peach and was therefore called the Peach Boy. Momotaro grew up strong and courageous and when he became great he left his village to go to face the oni, a sort of orcs who lived on the island of Onigashima, who came from time to time to harm and steal from the poor farmers of the village. With the help of three animal friends he managed to defeat the orcs and steal the treasure from them. So Momotaro I return home with all the jewels and treasures that he distributed to the people of the village and from that day they all lived in peace and harmony.
In this brightly colored kokeshi a fan is engraved with the colors of the flag of Japan and peach blossom emblems of this legendary hero.
The wood used for the creation of this kokeshi is Mizuki (Japanese dogwood). The kokeshi is accompanied by a black wooden base, a gold-colored screen and a small wooden plate, with its name and the stamp of the craftsman who made it. The height of this kokeshi is 11.5cm. Original packaging is included, stamped and signed by the artist who created the kokeshi.
