Vintage kokeshi handmade and hand painted by Okamoto Usaburo (1917-2009). Born in Shinto, Gunma prefecture, he began making kokeshi in the 1950s.
The name of this kokeshi is Kantsubaki which in Japanese means "winter camellia", in fact on her kimono red camellia flowers have been engraved and painted. Camellia flowers with their load of grace, beauty, audacity and elegance, are thought to be a symbol of love, of waiting, heralds of a new beginning. Over the kimono the kokeshi wears a Chanchanko, a red vest. It is 30cm high and is accompanied by a wooden plate, with its name and the stamp and signature of the artist who made it. Despite being a vintage piece, its condition is good.
