Vintage Kokeshi made and hand painted by award winning artist Suigai Sato.
Suigai Sato was born in 1920 in Gunma Prefecture, his real name is Sato Sadahachi, he began his career at the age of 18 as a painter with the famous artist Komuro Suiun from whom he took part of his name "Sui" to create his stage name Suigai. Subsequently, in 1949, he began making kokeshi and received many awards including the prestigious "Prime Minister Awards" in 1966. Suigai Sato's art has been recognized by the Japanese Imperial Family, in particular by Crown Prince Akihito, father of the current emperor Naruhito.
The name of this kokeshi is Iro Moyo which in Japanese means "colorful pattern". It is an elegant and refined work, with a long-limbed, linear and slender shape, which is distinguished by the elegant traditional hairstyle with chignon complete with hair clips (Kanzashi).
Bamboo leaves have been painted on his kimono, bamboo symbolically represents flexibility combined with resistance.
Under the kokeshi is the artist's stamp. Despite being a vintage piece, the overall condition is very good.
